Karen Loewy Movilla
Karen Loewy Movilla (she / her) is a Colombian multi-disciplinary theater artist, based in New Haven. The main question in her work is how do we claim a space that hasn’t been given. Focusing on a reclamation of narrative using an exploration of bodies and celebration of joy. Karen’s work uses digital media, embodiment, spoken word, and puppetry to confront academic texts, inherent biases, and oppressive systems. She devised and performed in Tia Talk with Amelia Bethel, presented as part of The Tank’s co-productions, Paper Kraine, and Ars Nova’s Ant Fest.
In her design work Karen focuses on the dramaturgy of the script. Who are the characters, what is their world and how do they interact with it. A space should be dynamic and highly interactive for the actors, therefore she finds inspiration in materiality and sculpture. Her work has been seen at The Tank, Chain Theater, Mercury Store and New Ohio.
While at Yale she has designed Kilele: una epopeya artesanal, directed by Juliana Morales Carreño, and Macbeth adapted by Jasmine Brooks and Tia Smith, directed by Jasmine. This Fall she will be designing Spunk directed by Tamilla Woodard at the Yale Rep.
Karen is a 2026 MFA Set Design candidate at David Geffen School of Drama. She is part of the Latin Playwright Circle and a 2022 Object Movement Resident
